When Canon released its PIXMA iP5200R photo inkjet printer, Amazon.com claimed that is may just become your favorite home electronic product. Pretty high praise, huh? We’ve heard many good things about it, and all of the features it offers, Amazon users have rated it 4 out of 5 stars, and CNET have given it an excellent rating (8.3 out of 10). It is pretty obvious the masses have a lot of positive things to say about this printer, but as for the favorite home electronic part - we’ll let you be the judge of that. This printer is priced at $229.00.

Canon touts this printers ability to produce lab quality 4″x6″ borderless prints in about 36 seconds (that’s pretty fast). In order to product such high quality prints the iP5200R uses Canon’s FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology. FINE technology is based on a next-generation 3,584-nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets as small as one picoliter. This printer also employs Canon’s ContrastPLUS five-color ink system which consists of 4 dye based inks and a single dye based pigment based black ink. The combination of these two systems allow for the “true to life” photos and high quality text.

Printing photos from your digital camera or video camera is easy with a simple connect to print feature. Simply connect your device and print! The printer features a dual paper path that allows you to store photo paper in one tray and plain paper in another (a very useful feature - no more swapping paper types at the last second). Of course duplex, or two sided printing, is a great feature. When employed it could allow you to cut your paper consumption in half.

The iP5200R is IEEE 802.11b/g wireless compliant, so it can receive wireless transmissions from up to 164 feet away. This is a great range for home network printing, meaning you can work in your kitchen and print to your printer in the other room without having to use a 164 foot USB cable to connect your two machines.

What are the users of this printer saying?

Pros: Great quality prints, WIFI enabled, Good speed printing photos, Quality, Reliability

Cons: Setup takes some time, Prints text somewhat slowly, US model doesn’t come with CD print tray

Anyone who has purchased an Epson or Canon printer over the last few years has learned about individual ink cartridges (tanks). Brother has been doing this a little longer than the other two, but it was Epson and Canon who really made the practice popular.

What is an individual ink cartridge? Well, in most cases your printer (see HP, Lexmark, Dell) your printer requires two cartridges. A black cartridge and a color cartridge. The color cartridge has three chambers inside of it that each contain a different color ink (cyan, magenta, yellow). Once you run out of one of the colors you must replace the entire cartridge. You could still have plenty of the other two colors, but with a single color cartridge it is essentially an all or nothing deal. This type of cartridge is the reason refill kits became as popular as they are. Individuals could now simply refill the color that was empty and put the cartridge back in their printer and continue printing. They provided a way for one to maximize their ink.

Now when you purchase a printer made by Canon, Epson, or Brother you receive at least 4 cartridges (tanks) with your printer. Each cartridge holds a specific color (black, cyan, magenta, yellow). Once of of the tanks runs out of ink you simply replace the specific tank, and nothing else. Now instead of refilling a cartridge you simply purchase a new one. Again, a way to maximize your printer ink.

With the advent of photo quality printers came more individual ink tanks. Some printers now can take up to 8 different cartridges. The standard black, cyan, magenta, yellow, and then 2-4 different photo grade ink cartridges (photo cyan, photo magenta, light cyan, light magenta). Amazingly enough we have yet to see a photo yellow cartridge (wonder why?).

We thought we would honor the individual ink tank idea using this commercial we found. It was made by Epson and perfectly captures the spirit of the individual ink tank. From the looks of it, those in the farming community might enjoy it as well. Replaceable utters, anyone? —- Check out the video!

Yahoo! recently released a list of “Most Popular” printers based on user feedback at Yahoo.com. The results are:

  1. Canon i850 Inkjet Printer
  2. HP PhotoSmart 8450 Inkjet Printer
  3. HP LaserJet 1320 Laser Printer
  4. HP PSC 2410 PhotoSmart Multifunction Printer

Canon i850The Canon i850 was given a 4.5 (out of 5 star) rating because of its ability to produce great color prints quickly and quietly. Users also liked the fact that the printer came with individual ink tanks (why replace the entire cartridge when just the magenta runs out?). Users also loved the fact that this printer was easy to set up. CNET (one of our favorite sites for researching new products) rated the printer 3.5 (out of 5) stars.

Our experience at Pacific Ink backs the comments made by Yahoo! users. Our customers are very eager to share their printer experiences when they call in. Even more, shortly after the release of this printer we saw a very quick rise in the popularity of the cartridges that are used in it.

The HP PhotoSmart 8450 is fall on the more expensive side of photo printers (A quick search ofHP PhotoSmart 8450 the web showed that prices range from $129.00 to $189.99). But Yahoo! users gave this printer 4.5 stars. PC World also gave it 4.5 stars. Users loved the LCD screen built on to the printer, the speed at which it printed 4×6 photos, and the fact that it is networkable. They also enjoyed the built in media card reader, which makes downloading the printing pictures so much faster.

The only negative we’ve heard is that the printer is capable of using up to 7 different cartridges. When faced with the prospect of choosing between high capacity or standard capacity, photo or non-photo grade inks, and the existence of a photo gray cartridge owners of this printer find purchasing the cartridges they need quite confusing (especially once you start mixing in the different part numbers for each of the cartridges).

HP LaserJet 1320The HP LaserJet 1320 is another great machine. Rated 4.5 (out of 5) stars by Yahoo! users, this machine is a true work horse (it is actually the machine we use in our warehouse to print the packing slips customers receive in their orders). Users liked that it provides high quality mono print outs (black and white), has great text printout, is networkable, and it offers duplex printing. On the flip side, they did not like that printouts can get quite warm (the paper actually gets hot), the low capacity toner cartridge that comes with the printer, the fact that it noisier than other laser printers.

The HP PSC 2410 is a multifunction printer (it can print, scan,HP PSC 2410 copy, and fax). It was given a perfect 5 start rating by Yahoo! users. They loved the LCD screen and the fact that quality that the 2410 could print photos with. It is rare to find a multifunction printer that can also produce quality photographs. The single con was there the printer does not have a document feeder. This means that you have to lift the lid each time you want to scan, copy, or fax something. Not a major flaw, but in an age of convenience we can see where the users are coming from.

Our suggestion? You really can’t go wrong with any of these. They are all solid machines. It really just depends on your printing needs.

Last week Canon released the PIXMA iP90v portable photo printer. It is an updated version of the iP90, which, since its release two years ago has been a very popular and well-reviewed printer. Canon advertises the iP90v as a truly portable printer that you can carry around in your laptop bag or one that you can use at home. Based on its performance, I would say that the iP90 is more meant for being used as a portable printer, since there are plently of other photo printers you can buy for home use that cost less and print faster/better.

The iP90v is rated at 16 ppm in black and 12 in color and it will print a 4 x 6 picture in about 81 seconds. The resolution for it is 4800 x 1200 dpi. When you compare that with the speeds of standard photo printers, you can see that this one is built more for portability than performance. The iP90v has the usually connectivity options like PictBridge and Bluetooth capabilities, which are a must for a portable printer like this. It’s built for people who want to take pictures of something and then print them out right away wherever they are, so they need to be able to use this printer without a computer.

The iP90v will retail for $250, which is about $40 more than the iP90 is currently selling for. Other than some new software, there doesn’t seem to be anything different about the iP90v so the price tag doesn’t seem justified. The iP90 was already pretty expensive to begin with, so $250 for this one seems really expensive. Since this model is coming out, they might be phasing out the regular iP90, so if you are interested in a portable printer, you might want to look at the iP90 while you have a chance.

Canon Introduces the PIXMA iP90v Photo Printer for a Growing Base of on-the-go Professionals [Press Release]

Canon announced yesterday that they were releasing two new PIXMA inkjet models, the iP300 and the iP1800. Unlike most of their other PIXMA models, these two are just standard inkjets and not all-in-one printers. At $80 for the iP3300 and $50 for the iP1800, these will be some of the cheapest Canon models available. This could mean that Canon is moving into the entry-level inkjet market, an area that they have shied away from mostly, or it could just be that they felt like releasing two cheap inkjets.

Both these printers have a resolution of 4800 x 1200, which is what you would expect for a sub-$100 printer. That’s not to say the print quality will be bad, it’s just that you shouldn’t expect these printers to produce high-quality photos or anything like that. The iP1800 is rated at 20 ppm in black and 16 ppm in color. We can probably assume that since the iP3300 is more expensive it will be faster, but Canon failed to include the iP3300’s speed in their press release so it’s a big mystery. Perhaps it only prints a 1 ppm and they don’t want to reveal that. The iP3300 is “certified for Windows Vista” so for the .000000001% of people that are running Vista, you are in luck.

Canon is releasing some new inkjet cartridges for use in the PIXMA iP1800. The new cartridges are the PG-30 black and the CL-31 color and they will cost $16 and $20, respectively. Canon says they are introducing these new cartridges as a “low cost alternative”. The cost may be low (relatively speaking) but it remains to be seen how small these cartridges are. If they contain half the ink that regular Canon cartridges have, then they won’t be too much of a bargain. But, if they are comparable to existing cartridges, then Canon may have an answer to Kodak’s new line of cartridges.

Two New Canon PIXMA Inkjet Photo Printers Offer Style and Quality at a Value Price Point [Press Release]

Canon has released some new extremely expensive imageRUNNER laser printers. So for you those of you out there looking for a $20,000 laser printer, this post is for you.

The new models that they announced are the imageRUNNER 5075, 5065 and the 5055. These things are pretty dang fast - they print up to 75 ppm, 65 ppm and 55 ppm, respectively. All three models have 1 gig of RAM and a 40GB hard drive, which is some pretty serious hardware. By comparison, a standard HP LaserJet printer has 16 megs of memory. These printers also have a bunch of paper options, including an add-on tray that can increase the capacity to over 7600 sheets. In case you hadn’t guessed by now, these printers are exactly made for the home user. They are designed for big business where a ton of people do a ton of printing. Lately, Canon has basically given up on the personal laser printer market and has decided to focus on their business products, since they can make a lot more money off them. Not only do they have higher price tags, but there are the inevitable fees Canon will make off of sending out their techs to repair these printers.

Now for the price: $28,000 for the 5075, $21,500 for the 5065 and $17,000 for the 5055.

Canon U.S.A. Unveils the ImageRUNNER 5075/5065/5055 for High-Volume Offices and Light Production Environments [Press Release]

Amazon has a bunch of Canon printers on sale right now. You can save up to $50, although of course they don’t specifically say which one is $50 off the usual price. All the participating printers are on this page.

They have some popular printers on there, like the all-in-one PIXMA MP830 and the PIXMA MP460. Both those printers have been well-reviewed and this might be a good chance to get the MP830 on the cheap. Lately Canon has been releasing new printers pretty frequently, which means that their older models are getting replaced more quickly. Once they decide they want to release an upgraded version of a current model, that usually means the current model is discontinued and stores just sell whatever inventory they have left.

Anyways, since it’s Amazon you have to add all the printers to your cart to see how much they cost. Most of the printers that are included in this deal are fairly common, so it doesn’t seem like they threw any junky printers in there.

Amazon has a deal going on where if you purchase a select Canon digital camera, you can get a free PIXMA iP6210D printer. Right now that printer is selling for $60, so it’s not a bad deal if you are in the market for a new digital camera. When you purchase the camera, you enter the coupon code MKS27AHD at checkout to get the free printer.
One of the best deals for a camera is the Canon PowerShot A540. It’s a 6MP camera that’s currently $170 and it has very good feedback from Amazon customers. It’s also the cheapest camera that’s part of this promotion.
