Brother

Brother MFC-9440CNThe Brother MFC-9440C Multi Function Center (MFC) is a network ready all-in-one printer that can be used in either your home or your office. Amazingly this printer prints 21 pages per minute not matter if you are printing black/white or color pages. Almost every other printer on the market is a few pages slower when printing in color. this is a great feature.

The 9440C has 64MB of memory and prints at an outstanding resolution of 2400 x 600. It comes with a standard paper tray that can hold 250 sheets, but you do have the option to move up to a tray that can hold 500 sheets. The printer handles a variety of paper sizes, including letterhead, letter, and legal, as well as envelopes.

As said before, it is network ready and even has a Ethernet jack. Setting this machine up in your office will be a breeze.

What about the other features?

The copier works without a computer, and copies at a rate of 17 copies per minute (black). This is a pretty decent copy speed. The fax machine supports both black/white and color faxing, and has a 33.6 KBps modem speed. This means that your fastest faxing speed is about two seconds per page (that is pretty good too!).

Our customers have called this a “work horse printer”, which for what is costs is a great thing. We have also been told, and have read, that this printer has duplex capabilities. Our customers have confirmed it does NOT. They have also told us that this is not an easy machine to set up. In fact, we have heard a lot of complaints about the complication of setting the machine up (from both MAC and PC users). But, they all say once you get past the set up it is a wonderful machine.

The editors at CNET loved the machine and gave it an excellent 8.2 out of 10. Take a minute and read their review.

It’s new cartridge Tuesday at Pacific Ink! This week we are happy to announce the release of compatible cartridges that replace the Brother TN-04 series. These cartridges are priced at $139.99 (black) and $129.99 (color). Retail stores carry the Brother brand product at $152.99 (black) and $147.99 (color).

These 100% compatible cartridges replace the Brother TN-04BK black, TN-04C cyan, TN-04M magenta, and TN-04Y yellow. They are designed for use in the following Brother multifunction printers:

Brother HL-2700CN
Brother HL-2700
Brother MFC-9420CN
Brother MFC-9420

The black ink cartridge yields up to 10,000 pages, while each of the colors yields 6,000 pages. These pages yields are based on 5% page coverage when using A4/Letter sized paper. The black toner cartridge has a higher yield because it contains more toner powder. This is because black is the key color for monochrome (black and white) and color printing. Each of the individual colors (cyan, magenta, yellow) mix together to form all of the colors you see on your printed page.

After extensive testing our compatible TN-04 cartridges offer the same quality print as you would expect from the Brother manufactured cartridges. You can expect correct color matching that will product prints that match the color you see on your computer screen, even ink distribution that will spread the ink evenly across the page to give a better looking print, and anti smearing formulation that will prevent your pages from smearing while they are printing. Printers come with an automatic delay time between pages to also prevent a page from smearing when the next page comes out on top of it.

Looking to reduce the amount of equipment on your desk? The Brother MFC-665CW may just be the solution you need. It’s a handy little unit that does a lot in just a little bit of space.

The Brother MFC-665CW combines a document printer, a photo printer, a flatbed scanner, a fax machine, a photo copier, a telephone, and an answering machine. The telephone and answering machine are what really set it a part from any other multifunction machines.

It can be connected directly to your computer via a USB cable, or you can connect it to your home or office network using an Ethernet cable. For those that live in the wireless world, it can be set up as a stand alone wireless printer.

The 665CW is competitively priced with other multifunction machines. It uses separate cartridges (one for each color) and prints 27 pages per minute in plain black and 22 per minute in color. The printer has an internal tray for holding full sized sheets of paper and a separate tray that holds up to 20 4×6 sheets of photo paper.

Its scanning capabilities have improved since earlier versions of brother multifunction machines providing a very easy scan process that produces high resolution scans. The MFC-665CW does not provide the ability to scan from negatives or slides. The scanner lid also has extended hinges so you can scan thicker documents and features OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology. The scanner lid also features a auto sheet feeder that holds up to 10 pages at a time, allowing you to fax or make copies in either black and white or color.

The fax function allows you to do fax polling, fax retrieval, or fax forwarding.

This machine supports various memory card formats (Compatibles, Secure Digital, Memory Stick, and xD Picture Card). You can print photos directly from your memory cards. All you have to do is place your memory card in the appropriate slot and your photos will be displayed on the 2.5 inch color LCD screen. YOu can select your photos from the screen and do some basic photo editing. You can also print images directly from your digital camera.

The unit is priced online at about $200.00, but you can find it at some online stores for about $20.00 less. Reasonably priced! It uses the Brother LC-51 series of cartridges. Manufacturer suggested prices for these cartridges are $23.99 (black cartridge) and $13.99 (for each cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges). Full compatible, non-Brother brand cartridges can be purchased online for as low as $3.99 each.

Overall it looks like Brother has created a great multifunction machine. User ratings are quite strong with excellent feedback provided. It may be that the only flaw is in the included telephone. While useful, its design is not one that invites a lot of use. Individuals won’t be replacing their desk phone anytime soon. The included telephone cord is quite sort, and would need to be replaced. The handset design is not the most ergonomic. Brother reports that the voice mail function will hold up to 29 minutes of messages.

Let us know what you think.

Anyone who has purchased an Epson or Canon printer over the last few years has learned about individual ink cartridges (tanks). Brother has been doing this a little longer than the other two, but it was Epson and Canon who really made the practice popular.

What is an individual ink cartridge? Well, in most cases your printer (see HP, Lexmark, Dell) your printer requires two cartridges. A black cartridge and a color cartridge. The color cartridge has three chambers inside of it that each contain a different color ink (cyan, magenta, yellow). Once you run out of one of the colors you must replace the entire cartridge. You could still have plenty of the other two colors, but with a single color cartridge it is essentially an all or nothing deal. This type of cartridge is the reason refill kits became as popular as they are. Individuals could now simply refill the color that was empty and put the cartridge back in their printer and continue printing. They provided a way for one to maximize their ink.

Now when you purchase a printer made by Canon, Epson, or Brother you receive at least 4 cartridges (tanks) with your printer. Each cartridge holds a specific color (black, cyan, magenta, yellow). Once of of the tanks runs out of ink you simply replace the specific tank, and nothing else. Now instead of refilling a cartridge you simply purchase a new one. Again, a way to maximize your printer ink.

With the advent of photo quality printers came more individual ink tanks. Some printers now can take up to 8 different cartridges. The standard black, cyan, magenta, yellow, and then 2-4 different photo grade ink cartridges (photo cyan, photo magenta, light cyan, light magenta). Amazingly enough we have yet to see a photo yellow cartridge (wonder why?).

We thought we would honor the individual ink tank idea using this commercial we found. It was made by Epson and perfectly captures the spirit of the individual ink tank. From the looks of it, those in the farming community might enjoy it as well. Replaceable utters, anyone? —- Check out the video!

Check out this review of the MFC-845CW on MSNBC’s site. This isn’t a brand new brand, as it’s been on the market for about four months now, but it’s still relatively new. It’s an all-in-one printer that also includes a fax machine and a 5.8 GHZ cordless phone, so it is truly an all-in-one that you can use for business. It is rated at 27 ppm for black and 22 for color, which is pretty fast considering how many features it has. One of the features it has is wireless support, which is nice but it’s not to be confused with actually having wireless networking installed when you buy the machine. It just means it’s capable of being wireless.

The rest of the stuff you can read about in the review. This review is slightly different because it’s not really technical like some of the other reviews we post here - it’s written more from a regular customer’s perspective. So while you might not get a full list of the specs and a bunch of statistics about the printer, you get a pretty decent perspective on what a regular customer thinks about this printer.

Amazon has a deal on select Brother printers this week where you can save up to $50 on certain printers. All but one of the deals is just a regular sale, so you don’t have to deal with any mail-in rebates and since it’s Amazon, there shouldn’t be any tax.

One popular printer included in the sale is the Brother HL-2040. It’s the one printer with a mail-in rebate, but you can get it for $90 even without the rebate. The HL-2040 has been around for a while, but it’s a popular printer that has received good feedback from most people. If you are looking for an entry-level laser printer, then this would be a good choice and we would recommend it over similarly-priced HP laser printers.

PC Mag recently reviewed the Brother MFC-5460cn and they weren’t overly impressed by it. It’s a relatively new printer that’s only been on the market for a couple of months, and so far it doesn’t seem like it has made much of an impact. Typically, Brother printers are never really top sellers just because of the amount of competition and their lack of availability. If you go into a store, you will usually find two or three Brother printers (at most) while you will probably find 10 different HP printers.

The MFC-5460cn is rated by Brother at up to 30 ppm for black and 25 ppm for color. It has a print resolution up to 6000 x 1200 dpi, which is pretty decent for an all-in-one machine, and it also has a 35-page automatic document feeder. It has built-in networking for scanning and sending faxes and also for shared printing. It uses a four-ink system with the Brother LC-51 ink cartridges. Finally, it has a 33.6Kbps modem. When the heck are fax modems ever going to reach 56Kbps? It’s been about 10 years since 33.6 was considered a good modem speed, yet even the newest fax-capable printers these days average their blazing speed 33.6 modems. What am I missing here?
Anyways, the main reason that PC Mag didn’t like this printer was its lack of speed. Their test showed that the MFC-5460cn was basically the same speed as its predecessor and much slower than the Lexmark X7350. Yikes…slower than a Lexmark? Not good. The other con was that the setup was confusing and it took a long time - something that people may or may not care about. The 5460cn is more geared towards a small office than just a casual user and you probably need to use it for business to appreciate all its features. It’s not going to blow you away with print quality or speed, so you have to like it for other reasons. Brother all-in-one printers are usually pretty solid (if unspectacular) and it looks like this one is no different.

Amazon has the Brother MFC-7220 on sale for $150. There is no rebate, so it’s just a regular sale price (that can disappear at any time).

The MFC-7220 is an all-in-one laser printer that also faxes and has an actual phone, too. Brother rates it at 20 ppm print speed and it has a resolution of up to 1200 x 600 dpi. It has a scanning resolution of 200 x 400 and it takes six seconds per page to scan. It has a 20-sheet automatic document feeder and it uses the TN350 toner cartridge. Almost all Brother multifunction machines are good quality and they are typically less expensive to operate than ones from HP.

If you need Brother MFC-7220 toner cartridges, you can go to our site.

Amazon has the Brother HL-2070N laser printer on sale for $89. There is no rebate, no tax and no shipping, so that is your final price at checkout.

The HL-2070N is a workgroup printer, so it’s suited for those who need to share. It has a 2400 x 600 dpi resolution with and Brother rates it at 20 ppm. It has a 250-sheet capacity and can produce its first page in under 10 seconds. It has been on the market for about a year and a half, so the sudden price drop (it originally listed at $300) might mean that they are phasing it out. If so, this is a deal to hop on because this has been a popular and well-reviewed printer - right now it almost has a perfect feedback rating on Amazon. Plus, since it’s a Brother laser printer, the toner costs will be lower than most other competing models.

If you need Brother HL-2070N toner cartridges, you can head over to our site. If you want to leave feedback on this model, you can post a comment.
