Epson Releases Stylus CX5000 and CX6000
Update: Based on the number of comments we’ve received below, apparently the CX6000 is not the most popular printer ever. There seems to be a problem with the chips on the cartridges that makes the CX6000 think they are empty after a very short amount of time.
Second Update: For anyone that has not thrown their CX6000 in the trash, we’ve finally added cartridges for it to our site. Stylus CX6000 cartridges.
Epson announced some more new releases today with two inkjets they are calling “more-in-ones”. Get it? They aren’t just all-in-ones, they are MORE-in-ones. I will pause so you can reflect on the hilariousness/cleverness of that.
Now you would think that with something called a more-in-one, that it might be a printer, scanner, copier, fax machine and like a toaster or something. But no, these are pretty much just regular inkjets. Epson’s explanation for calling them more-in-ones is that they supposedly offer “more unique features and benefits for end-users than any other all-in-ones at these prices.” So they are slightly better than other inkjets in their price rage - does that really deserve a whole new nickname?
Both the Stylus CX5000 and CX6000 are rated by Epson at 27 pages per minute for black and color, so like their other recent new printers, they print in color extra fast. The print resolution isn’t given, but they both scan at up to 2400 x 1200 dpi. Both feature PictBridge capability, while the CX6000 features a 2″ LCD.
The Stylus CX5000 will be $100 while the CX6000 will be $150. Both should be available in September.
New Epson ‘More-in-Ones’ Give Home and Small Office Users the Most Value-Packed Set of Features for Printing, Scanning and Copying [Press Release]

So I just bought the CX6000 on Monday of this week. Because of how recent it came out I absolutely can not find any place in town or online to order replacement cartridges. Even Epson doesn’t have them in stock. If you have any idea of where I could purchase these soon, do let me know - much appreciated!
Chloe -
It looks like Epson got a little ahead of themselves in releasing this printer, because the ink isn’t anywhere to be found. Because they are brand new cartridges that haven’t been used in any previous models, they seem to be hard to find. We currently do not stock them yet, and they are still not available online through Epson. You can check back in a few weeks for an update.

I am trying to decide between buying a deeply discounted CX4800 and a CX5000 or CX6000. Are the new models any better in any way? How much will the new cartridges cost?
George -
The new models are an improvement over the CX4800, mostly in terms of print speed - according to Epson, these new models will be 30% faster than the CX4800. Because the CX5000 and CX6000 are new, there isn’t much customer feedback on them, but the feedback on the CX4800 has been pretty mixed. Given that the CX5000 starts at $100, the discount for the CX4800 would have to be pretty attractive. Right now the cost of ink for these new models is the same for the color cartridges and more for the CX4800 black cartridge.
So it seems like one of the newer models looks like the better buy, but at the same time you might want to wait a little while if you can. Once these machines have been out for a little while, you will be able to see what people think of them. Occasionally, inexpensive Epson multifunction printers can have some quality issues, so sometimes it’s wise to be wary.

I just traded up from an Epson 760 to the 5000.
It’s a great machine. Copies and scans are excellent. No issues.
September 24th, 2006 at 12:37 pm
can’t find ink for my new CX6000 other than that I love it. How soon can I buy it at the store or discounted online?
September 25th, 2006 at 2:04 pm
Just bought a cx6000 at Best Buy. They have the replacement cartridges in stock.
Can anyone report the life of these cartridges? They look like very small capacity needing frequent replacement, i’d guess.

I received my CX6000 as a warranty replacement for my broken CX6600. After only 5 days of regular use, the black ink cartridge was empty and had to wait until EPSON stocked it. I found ink cartridges at OFFICE DEPOT $16.99 for black. My next cartridge only lasted 7 days.
September 27th, 2006 at 4:19 pm
I share your pain. I have had the CX6000 for two weeks (upgraded from the CX5400… big mistake) and I am already out of black ink. I don’t feel that I’ve printed out tons of stuff either. The color cartridges are about to run out verrrrrry soon. I went to CompUSA today to find cartridges and came up empty handed. I am very disappointed. One other quirk that bothers me… my CX5400 had a Scan button on the printer, so I could automatically launch the scanning program, and scan a document into PDF or whatever format. The CX6000 DOES NOT have this. You have to scan using the Epson software interface
I miss my CX5400. BTW, there is a “high volume” black ink cartridge out there for the CX6000. I’m skeptical, but stuck with this thing.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:22 am
I also received the CX6000 as a warranty replacemet for a CX7800 whose scanner & copier both failed right out of the box. While the features are nice, the CX6000 drinks ink like it’s water. Finding cartridges is also very difficult. I’d avoid it if I had a choice.I’m not happy right now.

I just purchase a 5000 about a month ago. Im actually am enjoying a really good printer after having duds for so long. The only disadvantage is the ink factors. I have found that I can buy ink at epson.com but anywhere else I cant find it. Its a great printer I do have to agree that I think it does soak in the ink cause my ink only lasted about the month that I had it.
October 4th, 2006 at 11:08 am
I just bought the CX6000 on 9-30-06 and within two days all my ink status dropped to 50 percent! I called Epson. One lady gave me the run around. She said that I used a lot of ink because I was printing a lot? But I have only printed one 4×6 picture & a 5 page report (in black). I called back and another person explained to me that it was because the initial prime of the ink heads and that from now on I would not see this type of drop…Has any one replaced the same color twice? Is this another excuse?
October 4th, 2006 at 11:45 pm
I’ve had a CX5000 for a week–
Get this– after only about 25 copies of just regular web stuff, my COLOR cartridges are 75% empty!!!– The black is at 50%– which makes no sense.
I don’t buy this story about priming the heads— initially after the first few copies (10 or 15) the levels were close to full– them all of a sudden dropped way down!!!
Is this a software problem with these new chipped cartridges?? You know, Epson got in BIG trouble last year for fraud– indicating empty cartridges that were NOT– they had to settle with California, etc.
If this continues, I am tempted to file a formal complaint with the state atty. general here– 30-40 pages per cartridge is NOT acceptable!!!!
October 6th, 2006 at 9:52 am
Epson just called me today. Here is what they had to say. The CX6000 is having an issue with the chip that shows how much ink is left (controls status screen on PC)
They say that after the first initial shut down of the printer it causes the chip to register the ink wrong. After the ink levels reach 20 percent it should then realize the correct amount of ink. From then on this issue will not happen again. They are also shipping all new ink sets to me. However she still stated that ink levels I am seeing are not correct and once the levels hit 20 percent it will read the correct amount. I will keep you all up-to-date on what does happen.
October 6th, 2006 at 11:36 am
I also received a new CX6000 as a replacement for a bad 6600 which was a refurb replacement for the original 6600 I bought. I do not like the CX6000. I have not used it because there are no generic cartridge available yet. When I did print something, the ink tanks were almost empty even though I did not use the print. I had to send all my 6600 ink tanks back to the supplier for a refund. When will generics be available for the CX6000? Thanks. P.S. I will never buy another Epson.
October 6th, 2006 at 12:06 pm
Follow up on the above. I called Epson and told them the ink levels dropped like a rock on my CX6000 replacement, and the guy is now sending me another CX6600 like my original purchase, and will issue a call tag to have the 6000 picked up at my house. He recommended buying an extension to my warranty which ends next week. They must be having serious problems with the CX6000’s.
October 7th, 2006 at 2:48 pm
Best Buy has the ink cartridges in the stores. I bet if you call their 800# you could buy them via telephone. I did not see them online when I searched.
October 8th, 2006 at 1:43 am
Thanks Brian for the info. I suspect the 5000 is having the same problem. I just ordered a ‘high-capacity’ black cartridge from Epson, and will wait and see what happens with the 20% theory.
Meanwhile, I posted a ‘wait and see’ product review on Amazon– I’m surprised nothing was there yet about these cx’s. For most people, low copy output is a dealbreaker.
Otherwise, it’s a nice printer for the price.
October 9th, 2006 at 11:03 pm
Thanks for all the great info on the CX6000. I purchased mine two weeks ago and was initially impressed with the quality of the prints. I have printed only 20 pages in color and have already run out of yellow and magenta ink! The printer gave no warning of low ink or anything. Now I’m on my search for new ink for this thing, but wondering if I should even keep it… With this kind of performance my copies are running $2 per page!! not including the photopaper which isn’t cheap. I will be placing a call to Epson in the morning expressing my concern for this product.
October 10th, 2006 at 1:00 pm
I just received a call from Epson’s Customer Service Department. They told me that the problem isn’t with the printer itself. They say that it’s a programmimg error on the chips wihin the ink cartridges themselves. The error causes the printer’s indicators to report ink levels erroneously. It was stated that once the actual ink level reaches 20%, the problem would correct itself. He’s sending out a black cartridge to replace the one in the printer. I will continue to monitor this to see if what they told me is true. They state the error has been corrected and this will not happen in future cartridges.
October 12th, 2006 at 10:34 am
My epson cx 6000 has been printing for… a week? I got an error today saying “install the ink cartridges = E=02″
I called Epson and they have to call me back. lame.
October 16th, 2006 at 7:09 am
CX5000 I just bought this printer last week at Walmart. I have printed out approx 20 shipping labels, and I am showing that I am almost out of all colors, and half of black. I used to get about 100 labels out of my Epson 42UX before replacing black, and only replaced color every 5 months or so. I called Epson and the lady said I should buy more ink, and see if it helps the problem. That’s over $50 more in ink to just see. I really like the printer, but the cost of ink isn’t worth it.
October 16th, 2006 at 10:16 pm
juss got this machine for use with my powerbook g4 with osx10.4 and it wont give show the printer upon installation in the printer list window, everything else goes in fine prints, scans, printer utility works fine, but i cannot print from computer, has anyone run into this. i also downloaded the driver from the site, juss to do it and still the same problem.
October 17th, 2006 at 3:27 am
Well, the black cartridge on my CX5000 has dipped below 20%, and the only thing that’s happened is the level alert tells me to go out and get a new cartridge. I haven’t seen any increase anywhere…
I print black only now because I don’t want to lose any more of the color cartridges. I’ve gotten about 40 copies out of this first set.
When I install the high capacity cartridge I’ll follow up on what happens. After the big lawsuit Epson had to settle last year regarding a similar problem, one would think they’d be more careful about consumption levels.
October 22nd, 2006 at 7:40 am
I just bought the CX5000 last week at Walmart. After printing one full page landscape in color and a few pages in black all 3 of the color inks show only about 25% full and the black about 75% full. I didn’t print anything for a couple of days and then yesterday when I started to print a page the printer made it’s usual sounds for an extended time before printing actually began. Having owned previous Epsons, I attributed this behavior to the printer cleaning it’s heads. It was after this that the sudden drop in ink levels showed up. I intend to call Epson and report this behavior. I will follow up after the call.

I recently purchased a cx6000 and I called Epson after I noticed that the cyan, magenta, yellow were almost out after 3 prints. The person that I talked to forwarded me to an ink specialist and she told me that there was indeed a problem with the chips on the ink cartridges that were included in the box. Then he sent me new cyan magenta and yellow inks. That resolved my problem and it is working great now. 24 prints and counting…
The customer service was also great. I am happy with my printer and the great support from Epson!!
October 28th, 2006 at 8:30 am
I emailed Epson using the form on their site regarding the problem mentioned in my previous post. I received a reply which stated that ’some’ of the cartridges included with the new printer had defective chips which caused the problem I’m seeing. The person said that after the ink supply was depleted to about 20% capacity the chips would then start reporting the correct amount of ink remaining. I hope this is correct and time will tell. BTW, no one offered to send me any free cartridges as some people have reported. If the “20%” story doesn’t happen I will certainly complain more.
November 1st, 2006 at 7:58 pm
If you guys find ANYTHING out on how the ink can last longer, I would truly appreciate getting in on tha secret. I only printed paper color copies IMAGINE how much blood (ink) I would loose printing photos. I am stuck amd very UNHAPPY.
November 6th, 2006 at 9:48 am
received CX5000 4 days ago. Printed out about 30 pages of black and white text. The magenta indicates 50% and the black 75% full. Tech support says that the initial cartridges go fast and after replacement should deplete at a much slower rate. I hope so.
November 10th, 2006 at 3:31 pm
I brought Cx6000 back to store because indicators read that ink was low on first day. Store told me they were only sample cartriges. So I bought a black cartridge because they didn’t have colors. The new cartridge showed 75% full, then down to 25% after only a few copies. I bought another, and even worse. I called Epson, and was given the run around like they don’t know that this is a problem. She told me to take the cartridge out and put it back in, now the printer won’t print at all, and I am past the return warranty date.
November 12th, 2006 at 9:03 am
OK, let’s summarize the various excuses that Epson is offering for rapid depletion of ink cartridges on the CX6000:
(1) Defective chips on “some” ink cartridges that erroneously show low ink levels.
(2) The cartridges shipped with new printers are only “sample” cartridges that hold less ink than “normal” cartridges.
(3) It takes a lot of ink to charge the printheads on a new printer, and subsequent ink consumption will be much less.
Anybody see a pattern here? These excuses all sound fishy to me.
Epson sent me the CX6000 free, as a replacement for my faulty CX5200 (clogged printheads). So far I’m no happier with the CX6000 than the CX5200. In my opinion, these Stylus models that consume lots of ink just to clean the printheads are poorly engineered. And good luck trying to find generic replacement ink cartridges for the CX6000. They’re not available yet on any of about 12 ink sites I visited. So you’ll have to spend $50 to replace all 4 cartridges. What a racket! I will never buy another Epson printer.
November 12th, 2006 at 11:45 am
I just purchased the cx5000. It is saying i have to replace my ink and i have not even got to print yet. I ran across this site looking for ink refills..lol I also had a real hard time getting the dang thing installed. I tried then took it to shop and they tried it would recognise my scanner but not the printer..Well anyways I sure picked a lemon this time…Don’t have box still or I would be taking this baby back…
November 13th, 2006 at 6:13 pm
Just called Epson support (no 800 number - thanks alot). Rep told me the same story (problem with chip - will self-correct at 20%, etc.). She said that the chip problem is ONLY ON THE CARTRIDGES EPSON SENT WITH THE PRINTER. She said other cartridges purchased elsewhere would not have this problem. I hope she’s right.
November 14th, 2006 at 5:34 pm
I purchased a CX5000 last week and was that ever a mistake. Printed out 5 pictures and two E-Mails and just about out of ink.Sorry I gave my CX5400 away, wrote Epson three days ago no e-mail back. Think they have a BIG problem they don’t know how to fix. I have tried every aftermarket ink company and NO-One has re-placement Carts. If there is a chip problem they should contact customers. I have aways owned Epson, but now I can’t afford to keep it in ink.Does anyone know of a aftermarket company that has ink for CX5000??? help!
November 27th, 2006 at 2:37 pm
I recently bought the CX5000, as with everyone else I am being told that my Cyan ink is low and needs replaced, not bad as this is a bought cartridge and not one that came with the printer, that only lasted two prints. As for the 20% level, well I’m passed that after only printing 5 6″X4″ photo’s and the printer refuses to print anything else till the cartridge is replaced.
Anyone know how I can get this piece of junk to print till the cartridge is truely empty?
November 28th, 2006 at 11:36 pm
I just bought an epson cx6000. After opening I realized it had 4 different ink cartridges to replace I thought what anywould would think, $$$$$$$?????? So I got online to research the cost them and found this website. After reading all these reviews im very skeptic to take open everything and go any further or should I return it? Is the problems with the ink still continuing? Please HELP!! What should I do return it? highrider411@yahoo.com
Vicky
Since we haven’t heard any updates on Epson fixing the printer, at this point you would probably be better off returning your printer. There are so many other comparable models on the market that it just doesn’t make sense to keep one that has been problematic for a lot of people. ISo if you can still return your printer, you probably should. Individual tanks actually do save you money in the long run, so it might be wise to switch to a Canon that features those type of cartridges.
November 29th, 2006 at 6:22 pm
EPSON has a great reputation and why they don’t come out and help us is beyond belief. I am completely and utterly astonished that a company would let themselves be ruined, and believe me when I say I will tell everyone I meet to steer clear. There is absolutely no excuse and there are pages and pages of complaints and NOTHING from EPSON. All I can think is that they must be really really dumb to think we won’t sound off about a real piece of junk. I installed my third set of inks and got the exact same results with them as everyone else has gotten. Absolute rubbish. I am taking this POS back to BEST BUY and they had better have a HP to replace it with. Nuff said. I have had many good EPSON inkjet printers, but I will not sink more of my hard-earned money in this rat hole of a piece of CX6000 junk. EPSON, you are a bunch of idiots and you move at the speed of a glacier.
November 30th, 2006 at 5:41 pm
I have been told that the CX5000 & CX6000 uses the same ink asd the CX7800. I amchecking this out.
December 4th, 2006 at 8:42 am
Stay away fron the CX series! After a month, printer does not recognize the ink cartridges. Same thing happen to the C80 and the CX5400. Time to try HP. Epson support just repeats what is stated in the manual.
December 5th, 2006 at 2:31 pm
Remember that it has always been that Epson printers make great cheap printers by having very small jets that tend to clog so, turn the printer off by the “off” button on the printer, not the power strip. Also, it is borderline criminal that they do not make cartridges with sufficient capacity or easy plug-in replacement print heads, but that is not the nature of the inkjet printer business.
Try 4inkjets.com for aftermarket cartridges and discounts on OEM. I haven’t used them yet but the price and warranty are right. Post your experiences with them for all of us in parched cartridgeland.

I received the CX5000 today from Epson as a replacement for a defective CX4800 (which was a replacement for another defective CX4800 which was a replacement for a defective CX3800). This afternoon I printed 1 page (from the “Print Test Page” button in the printer setup) and it worked fine. I then attempted to print a 1 page Word doc and the printer didn’t recognize the black ink cartridge. I took it out and shook it, re-inserted it and the Word doc printed fine. The ink level dialog, however, showed my black cartridge at 50% and the three color cartridges at 25%! That after printing only 2 pages, and mostly black! I attempted to print the Word doc again and the printer didn’t recognize the black ink cartridge again. I got on the phone w/ Epson Tech Support and reported my problem. She had me take the black cartridge out again and shake it well, re-insert it, turn off the printer, unplug the printer for a minute and then turn it back on. From there she had me print the Test Pattern page and it turned out fine. I printed my 1 page Word doc again and it was fine. The ink levels, however, still showed low at 50% black and 25% for the colors! I asked about that and she said that the initial charging/priming uses a lot of ink. She gave me a call reference number in case I need to call back and that was about it. For the past couple of decades I had always heard great things about Epson, but beginning with my initial purchase of the CX3800 early in 2005, I’ve been really frustrated with Epson printers. I should point out that the Epson people on the phone have always been very cordial. And with this latest replacement, in a friendly way, they made it clear that if I have any more problems beyond the next 30-days that I will be out of warranty. That is because the warranty starts with the initial printer purchase.

Epson CX 6000….MORE-IN ONE?
I previously owned an Epson CX 5400. It was a decent machine. As a teacher, not only do I use the printer, and scanner, but I also rely on a printers ability to make copies. Recently, my CX 5400 broke down (because the ink tubes clogged) and to repair the unit was not cost effective. I was happy with the service the CX 5400 gave me, so, with confidence, I purchased another Epson…the new CX6000. It claimed to be “MORE-IN-ONE”. After using the machine I can honestly say that IT IS NOT. In fact, it’s less. In the CX 6000, not only did Epson eliminate the Lighter/Darker copy capability, but they also eliminated the Enlarge/Reduce feature. To top it off, the CX6000 is the slowest copier I have ever used. It took nearly 45 seconds to run off a black&white document(from copy bed)and almost 1 minute to copy and color document (non-photo). I called customer service and they told me there was nothing wrong with the machine. CAVEAT EMPTOR

Well I the latest sucker here. I dont need to vent to you all of my ink levels or sparce number of pages printed. Let me just bend over, now kick my ass!
December 19th, 2006 at 5:22 pm
Hello,
Well, I am in the same boat as everyone else. My trusty 5400 stopped printing two colors. I bought new cartridges both generic and in Epson to see if the problem was with the brand of ink. Ran over 20 head cleanings and no luck. Found online that the 5400 had problems with inktubes coming unattached. I was impressed that even though it was about a year out of warranty, they still offered to have me send it back free. They sent back this cx6000 and like everyone else, I am having ink level problems and am awaiting my “Thank you for playing” free set of inks. Everyone who is having this problem should call and at least get the free set of inks, esp. if you can’t return the unit. Keep in mind that Epson does have a pending class action lawsuit for some of its other ink cartridges. I am going to contact the lawyers listed for that lawsuit and let them know they need to look into some of the newer cartridges and perhaps have them added to the suit.
Even though they hide it, you can find on the technical specs for this model the expected yields per cartridge. They are very, very low. For the CX6000 Black is expected to get 240 pages. High capacity black 370 and colors carts. 350 pages. My older 5400 had listed yield of black at over 1000 pages per cartridge. Let’s remember they are not in the business of making printers but in selling ink. I agree with the teacher above, that this model is lacking many of the features of the lower 5400. I don’t care about the little color screen as I hardly ever print pictures direct from the printer but only after massaging them a bit on the computer. I also find it a waste to be able to insert my memory card or camera directly as it is easy enough to connect it to the computer or insert the memory to the computer. These are not upgrades for me. I, too, am disappointed at not being able to program a button to do an automatic scan from the machine’s front panel but have to use the software. I am also displeased that you can’t adjust the lightness/darkness of copies nor shrink pages, only copy at 100% or fit to page. I used my old one quite often for its copy features and find this one sorely lacking. I am not sure if this one will allow you to save scans to .pdf. This is not a better model for me. I would have preferred them to fix my older 5400. If anyone needs an almost new set of 5400 inks, let me know. Pay for the post office shipping and their yours.
December 19th, 2006 at 7:23 pm
According to Epson support there is NO support for USB 2.0 for Windows 98. In other words the tech tech told me I have to hunt down an old USB 1.1 PCI card or get a print server. F*** that, fuck Epson, F*** the CX6000. I think that’s a buunch of bull****. The drivers for the scanner worked so what gives with the printer? I’ll have to come up for a new name for it cause it doesnt print in Windows 98. I’ll call it the half assed EPS*** Scanner. It does work for me in Win2000, but from what I’ve heard I’ll only get to print 15 sheets before I’m down to 20% ink. F*** you EPSON, I have a chip resseter. HA HA.
December 19th, 2006 at 7:42 pm
I’ve noticed that retailers are starting to sell compatible carts for the cx6000. I ordered a set from meritline.com ($10 for one of each, but $8 for shipping - still cheaper that Epson) and just installed one (yellow). So far so good - reads as a full cart.
December 19th, 2006 at 7:43 pm
Forgot to add one thing - the new cart are 9 ml. (their manufactured by G&G). My carts for my cx7800 (also from G&G) are 17 ml. - so you’re really only getting half the ink.
December 25th, 2006 at 11:48 am
I got the CX6000 about 2 weeks ago and I’m greatly impressed with the print quality. The ink consumption is a bit high so I was exited to find compatibles from 4 Inkjets.com for $4.90 per cartriage. So I bought 20 cartriages. When I get them the printer tells me they are not compatible with this printer and wont let the printer work. The instructions on the ink box says that you will be warned that they are not Epson ink but to click “OK” and the printer will go ahead and start charging the cartriages. But there is no “OK” option. Just QUIT and INSTALL INK. when I click on quit it does just that. When I click on “install ink” it goes back to the beginning showing step by step how to change the ink. I called 4 Inkjets and they stayed on the phone with me trying 3 comlete new sets of cartriages thinking I might have a bad set but I always got the same ‘LOOP’ of instructions. They were very nice and told me to ship them all back and they will fully refund my money. I called Epson and of course I had to stress VERY STRONGLY that the pirnter is supposed to take compatibale inks and that’s what I wanted to use. Finally the guy said that it’s just probably that brand that isn’t working. I can’t see that becase I see posted here that someone else is using G&G compitables. Do I have a printer that mabye Epson FIXED to use only Epson ink? Maybe someone can give me a clue about using comptibles I don’t know. I used them with my Canon S800 and never a problem.

I just bought the CX5000,and no wonder it’s so cheap. It is an ink alcoholic…but the prints are great!I have gone thru $100 worth of cartridges in about 3 weeks, and my HP didn’t use that much in 3 months…I don’t suggest it for a business,or if you only print docs.I’m going to go and buy something else for my office and give this to some guy richer than me.

Lorey, are the carts from 4inkjets G&G? If not, try the carts from meritline.com. I’ve only replaced the yellow so far - but it reads as a full cart, no problem.

I didnt make as far as someof you did,14 pages and no ink, across the board ,,,,,,epsons suck,i have since gone back to my old hp,at least i can fill those cartages. To me this is just a scam by epson for yoy to buy more ink, that one way to make money,i almost think there like the oil companys…NO MORE EPSONS FOR ME AND I WILL TELL EVERONE I KNOW NOT TO BUY ANY EVER,,,,,,CX6000 SUCK!!!!!!!!!!

I bought a cx 5000. Out of ink after about 50-60 pages in “fast draft” mode (95% text only). Print quality was lousy. I’m donating this to a thrift store. I will never buy another Epson until they change their products and marketing practices….

I came here thinking I’d post some facts on my new CX5000 to help others only to find the facts have mostly outed themselves! I’ve not run completely out of ink yet but I’ve printed less than 50 pages altogether.
This printer sputters and spits for the longest time before printing, is the slowest printer I’ve used in a long time, has no OCR with it and very cumbersome software.
It’s supposed to enlarge and shrink from 25% to 400% but I’ve not actually done this and can’t find the way on the printer.
I’ve got after market cartridges ordered. Hope the printer accepts them.
I’ve contacted Epson about the changing ink levels, speed of performance, etc. and received back a long explanation of factors governing print speed, you know, USB 1 instead of USB 2, installed memory, multitasking and other excuses I’m already familiar with.
I do have to admit the CX5000 has excelled at one thing: making my old X6170 Lexmark look really good!
January 9th, 2007 at 9:52 am
I also received an Epson CX6000 as a replacement for a CX5400 (did not print cyan). I’m having a jamming problem with it and so I called Epson and spoke to Carlos. He said that they will replace the printer but I need to give them my credit card number. When I asked why he said it was for security purposes and they do this all the time. What does that mean? Has anyone given their credit card number in order to get a printer replacement?
January 9th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
I installed my new epson CX6000 the day I bought it. After 15 minutes. . . and a total of ONE printed document . . . I got an error message saying ‘out of ink’.
I was able to circumvent the problem by aborting the printing command. When I then re-ordered a print, it worked.
I have sent a complaint to Epson. I am mysified. Epson has always been a reliable company in the past.

CX5000 will not accept compatible ink cartridges. Found out after I purchased these compatibles from two on-line supplies. Have returned for refund. Has onyone out there been sucsessful with compatibles? If so, who is supplier.
Thanks - Phil

I just purchased this CX6000 printer and it won’t seem to get installed on my machine. I wish I could get to the point of ink problems. I’m gonna return this thing and punch the wonderful staff at Comp USA. I asked them for a strong recommendation. Thanks for the feedback!

I bought a cx5000 in december and my ink ran out after 50 pages. Bought 4 new cartidge because it wont start with one of the cartidge half full (even the red that i never used was 30% gone), and guess what it told me again after 40 pages that a cartidge was empty!!
EPSON IS ROBING US BLIND, WE ARE A CAPTIVE CROWD FOR THIS MAFIA TYPE OF BUSINESS!!!!
February 6th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
I bought this printer around christmas time. In a month and a half I have gone through 4 FULL sets of ink. At $65 for a full set of 4 cartridges I have paid twice what I paid for the printer in a month and a half. This is SO rediculous. The 20% thing that Epson has been saying is completely false.
The last time I bought a new set of ink, I set the printer to print only in black ink. I have not printed a single page in color. My tanks are just about to run out of ink again. I HAVE NEVER PRINTED A SINGLE COLOR SHEET!!!
I weighed the “empty” color ink tanks and weighed the brand new color ink tanks (all three at the same time) and there was only a .02 ounce difference.
The worst part? If one tank “runs out” you HAVE to replace it. The printer will not print another seet until you do even if you are not using that tank.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER!!

This is a bunch of nonsence. EPSON SUCKS! I Have a three week old Epson CX6000, I have printed excatly 5, 7X10 photographs I am completely out of color ink. 5 photographs? Are you effing kidding me? No wonder Kodak Eastman is going under they’re not robbing everyone blind like the rest of the digital world.

I guess I’m a member of this club. I have a CX5400 and it fails to recognize the ink cartridges. I am using generic ink cartridges. KDL brand, which I have used with great success on my CX3800 printer. I’m wondering if the CX5400 is built not to use generic cartridges. I’m looking for a set of used Epson brand cartridges, for the CX5400, that I can refill. If anyone has a set they don’t mind getting rid of, I’d be more than happy to pay all postage. I just can’t see spending the money on new Epson cartridges. Contact me at lrg33@hotmail.com

Just bought compatible cartridges for Epson Stylus CX 5000… as a pp said, they won’t be recognized by this printer! Now I have three cartridges I cannot use… I wonder if the industry will continue to sell these cartridges that won’t work.
Off to Staples to spend more $$$ than I’d like so I can print something.

I just bought the CX6000, but thanks to all of the previous reviews, it will go right back to the store. My wife gave me a B&W laser printer for valentine’s, but I wanted an all in one…so I exchanged it.
From now on I will check out the reviews of a product before I spend my hard earned $$$

As many of you, just came from the CompUSA emptyhanded after my brand new CX5000 got out of ink just after 5 pages. Since CompUSA in Chicago is going out-of-business (THEY DESERVE IT!) I could not get any replacement cartriges, but they told me, that all new Epson Printers are sold with a DEMO CARTRIGES that does not have full tank.!!!
Reading all these complains I think it is time to look into a CLASS ACTION against EPSON! Anybody?
March 13th, 2007 at 4:56 am
Hi there,
This is my third time with 50 pages ink cartridge payload!
At first they said it was because it came with the brand new printer and were not made to last.
OK then I bought brand new Epson CX5000 at Staples. Again, after 50 pages and $60 it was dead.
Finally Epson told me on the phone after 30 minutes about their faulty cartridge chip problem, (so much time and money waisted for me!!), then they shipped me a set of 4 cartridges.
After 100 pages the set died again!
Now I was also thinking about a CLASS ACTION lawsuit against them. I am dependent on a bunch of crooks to pay a very high price for rigged cartridge that can be manipulated all the time and waiste all my time!! This is OUTRAGIOUS!!!

I continue to have ink problems with my CX6000. I am Blogger #6 on this site. I currently am averaging only 175 black only prints on one Black ink cartridge.
I just wrote Epson a letter of complaint about this product. I have spent close to $375 in ink the last 8 months compared 1/3 that on my previous Epson printer. There is an nherit flay in this models ink cartridges, whether too small to fit enough ink to even get through a ream (500) of paper or how it wastes ink in the printing or cleaning nozzle process.
Will wait for letter response… but probably my last Epson Product.
March 26th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
Tried my first G&G compatible cartridge today (black) and no luck. Has anyone found a compatible brand that does work? I actually got some decent usage out of my original cartridges that came with the machine.
March 26th, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Well I bought my ill-fated cx5000, I ran out of ink in the first hr. of use….GRRR. I am sooo frustrated. Now I need to go and do some reserch to see what printer to buy now. I love the print quality, but the ink issue is a big zero in my book. I am so glad I found this site. I just tought this was just a fluke. Thanks everyone.—Toni

Also bought a Cx5000. I had amazing luck and got one set of compatible cartriges to work in the printer (after about 1/2 hour of pressing different buttons). The second set (of the same manufacturer) I was unable to get it to work. I guess I was only buying a scanner.

Having my CX5400 breakdown after installing a new set of ink cartridge$$, I called Epson who gave me the “loyalty” option to buy another at a “discount” to replace it and threw in a set of ink cartridges too. I thought it was okay, but after reading the horrors of the CX6000(my replacement),I have decided to return the shipment and not go through a repeat agony of an unreliable printer. I only wish I found this site before spending so much time and energy to discover that the most expedient way to resolve the Epson issue is to trash, burn, forget, and buy anoher brand. It’s a sad statement for EPSON -what was once a great company. glad i don’t have stocks in the company. “Thank you” to all those who have enlightened me at this blog site.
April 29th, 2007 at 10:27 am
what are the parameters for a class action suit against epson, regarding the cx 6000 after a few minutes of reading your experiences (many of which are matching my own problems) it is incredibly obvious epson has manufactured an ink devouring monster with the simple intent of making we the consumers spend twice the price of our printer purchase in ink in the first few weeks of ownership. what say at the very least we coordinate a mass return of our printers to epson. several thousand printers returned all on the same day at the least would bring news attention.
May 7th, 2007 at 4:34 pm
Dang. I too bought the cx6000 and got burned by their fraudulant practices. i don’t understand how the stores that sell these printers for this company are not held accountable also. it is apparent that epson does not care about selling a defective product to the consumers but the stores selling it are also aiding in this scam for they make a profit off of it too. my energy is going to be spent towards staples for selling this product!
May 20th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
Glad I found this site, set up my CX6000 last night, but decided to wait to install the ink cartridges. Based on everything I’ve read here, the printer will be returned less than 24 hours after initial purchase. Thanks

My epson cx 6000 has been printing for… a week? I got an error today saying “install the ink cartridges = E=02″
I called Epson and they have to call me back. lame
Can anyone tell me what the results were?
I have the same problem.
Can I fix this?
I have only had my printer about a month.
June 2nd, 2007 at 3:51 pm
I was one of the first people who “alerted” others about this printer. One would have thought that, in time, the cartridge problem would have been solved. The fact that it’s not after 9 months means that epson has not only been lying about the problem, it’s deliberate. It’s policy on their part that these cartridges only print a few copies. Epson has lost my business forever. Pacific Ink, do you have any recommendations on a good printer?
June 22nd, 2007 at 9:47 pm
I purchased a cx 6000($)printer from best buy and printed out less than 20 6″ x 4″ color photos and i have already run out of red and blue ink.
i had four times that capacity on my old epson stylus 777!
My g&g compatible cartridges are NOT compatible with this printer and I can find no way to get this $%%^&*&^&#$# printer to recognize them. Had no problems like this with my good old basic 777!
Has anyone got any suggestions,(other than blowing the damn thing up!), as the recognize warning on the cartridge box does’nt apply to my printer software. JUST GOES ROUND AND ROUND with the install procedure. There is no control panel to click “yes” on!
Epson needs to get their pants sued off (again) over this corporate-endorsed scam!
June 25th, 2007 at 6:45 pm
I bought this printer at Frys it ran out of black ink after 20 prints.
Im thinking of taking epson to small claims court. I dont care what epson says.
I will never buy an ink jet again after this from any company.

I bought Epson Styluss 400 last year. Currently im out of the cartridge and i went to the store bought only black cartridge but still it is not working, it doesnt print. In order to start printing do i have to buy complete colors instead the individual ones ?
Thanks

JUST PURCHASED A CX6000 ON SALE …COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT I COULD BUY IT FOR ONLY $49.99.
AFTER ALL IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE EXCELLENT PHOTOS……GUESS WHAT… I NEVER GOT TO PRINT A SINGLE PHOTO………..I OPENED THE BOX AND READ THE INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY, THEN PROCEEDED TO SET UP…AFTER INSTALLING THE FIRST SET OF CARTRIDGES, THE MACHINE TOLD ME TO CHANGE MAGENTA SINCE IT WAS EXPENDED….
IT READ AS EMPTY RIGHT OUT OF THE VACUUM PACKED
PLASTIC BAG????????
I CALLED THE CUST SERVICE TEL # AND WAS SHIPPED OFFSHORE TO SOMEONE WITH POOR ENGLISH SKILLS THAT TOLD ME TO CALL BACK FRIDAY, TOO LATE NOW.
THAT COST ME A LONG DIST TEL CHARGE SINCE THEY DON’T EVEN HAVE A TOLL FREE # FOR SET UP HELP..
I AM GOING TO RETURN IT FIRST THING IN THE MORNING TOMMORROW……SORRY EPSON BUT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO ADD ME TO YOUR INK ADDICTION LIST.

Yes, I believe a class action suit against Epson by those who purchased the Cx5000 and CX6000 AIO printers is in order.
There is clearly a defect, and Epson does nothing about it. I give up on mine - 25 pages per set of cartridges is dreadful.
I have purchased another AIO, naturally of another brand, but am hesitant to toss this CX6000 in the dumpster as I don’t want to loose any rights to a settlement.
If the cartridges are the defect, then we deserve new ones that work right. If the printers are the defect, then we deserve new printers. If Epson refuses to take care of the customers who purchased CX5000 and CX6000 printers, they deserve a class action suit against them.

I agree with no. 46. I experienced it all
as described. I have had exactly the same problems. The generic ink G&G doesn’t work. I think that there is someone that makes the generic out there. This printer CX6000 I returned within the 2 weeks because even tho it read the generic ink as “out of ink” (black) it kept flashing after I pulled the UB-plug AND WAS STUCK. The second thing is, it drinks ink like crazy, and after 1 week I have to replace the black ink again. The story was that “the starter ink was not full”, but this was not a starter ink cartridge. I had a CX4800 and that was great. It used generic cartridges fine. There is some restocking fee if I return this printer to Circuit City, I think what it will cost me per year in ink may be worth the “hit”. I think if I can get the 4800 back from Good Will I donated and repair the paper tray problem or buy another brand and never go near Epson again, it is a good thing. I know for sure that the chip is set so the 6000 doesn’t work with compatibles, unless someone has come up with a “compatible solution” cartridge. These cartridges are made overseas and the profit is astronomical. It’s a good tax deduction for some people and thats all. Maybe if enough people returned their Epson printers, stores wouldn’t carry them. What a nightmare that tech support. Glad i found this site. I was so upset because I am a business person and need the printer and I lost so much time. The people in India -tech support didn’t know what to say other than send me 2 colored ink cartridges. You are so shocked when you are having the time loss and printer problems and expensive ink drinker and malfunction, that you don’t realize this is a good quality printer that uses too much ink (expensive), that takes too long to copy, that wastes alot of time signalling the ink is low after a short while, and so far may not use the generic ink. There are old models of the CX6000 and newer ones and the first ones use the generic ink I hear. I laughed so hard at the 4 letter words expressed by some people, but is is really very sad and I pray Epson reaps what they have sewn on this one..

Wow. I was going to buy this printer for college. Guess not. Sorry you all had to suffer, but thanks for saving me!
August 6th, 2007 at 11:09 am
CX 5000 doesn’t include a very useful feature that is included int he cx 6400 and cx 6600. Scan to card is a great feature that allows you to scan a document or photo directly to a memory card without having to turn on the computer. That this printer has a memory card slot but forces you to use the computer’s software to scan to the card is terrible!!! Poor Planning!!! Not efficient and not very user friendly !!! Very unhappy to get the short end of the stick in this issue. Also, dropping the high capacity black ink cartridge in favor of always using the small black is a convenient way for epson to suck us dry with more profits for them. Because you go through black quickly….you should be allowed to save a few pennies (not to mention the time and hassle) of using a high capacity black ink cartridge that won’t need to be replaced near as often as the low capacity black cartridge. Fix both these issues in future printers or you may lose valuable customers to your competition!!!

I purchased a Epson Stylus CX6000 in October of 2006, I have already bought 6 complete sets of ink cartridges and I don’t use it that much, I don’t think I have printed over 20 5 by 7 pictures, but after reading all the things that people have to say on this blog, I guess that I’m not the only one. Another thing is that I am having a problem loading the software for the scanner. I still can’t make the Scanner work properly. If anyone has some advice please help me. Thank you

I also purchased a CX5000 and after two weeks am supose to replace the cartridges.
The only reason I purchased the printer is I was involved in the 1st law suit and was give a $45. on line store credit so it only cost me $14.00. Now I see why, Esson is going to make up the loss they took by doing the same thing they did that caused the law suite. I’m sure there is a way to overwrite the printer software to use compatable cartridges, Does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks

i have bought an epson cx5000.
am very happy so far.prints very good photos
using g+g compatable cartridges $5.00 each.
so far they are working fine.1/3rd the cost
of epson cartridges.thank you
September 6th, 2007 at 7:50 am
I have the CX5000 and had the ink problem when I replaced the cartridges the first time…I had no problem with the initial start up ones that came in the box. After 5 copies the tanks dropped to 75% and then the next day they were at 0% without having printed anything else. Epson is a joke…when you call tech. support the first thing they say is “You have purchased one of our best printers” My response was “really, have you read about the problems lately posted all over the internet” Then the guy tells you his name is Fred - and he has the thickest accent you ever want to hear! They sent me a new printer…but my fear is that this will happen when I replace the cartridges the next time…and by this time my warranty will be expired. Epson why don’t you stand behind your products…you deserve to be sued again and NOT EVEN EXIST!!!!!! DON’T BUY EPSON PRODUCTS THEY ARE HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What number is the best # to call to get a hold of someone at Epson that will actually do something?
September 7th, 2007 at 7:08 pm
this is my second reply.the first one was that i really liked the cx5000.
since then i have had the same problems
every one else seems to have.will not recognize compatible cartredges all of a sudden.useing an awful lot of ink.i have been told by poeple at staples that the cx5000 has been dicontinued.i am stuck with this ink drinking piece of junk.i would like to buy some thing different that is
reasonably close in price.that actually performs like it should. clayton

Bought mine last November,CX5000, same problems. Just got off the phone with Epson and they are sending me a new one without any argument because of “a known defect”. I asked if I could get a different model and was told no, the new one has been tested for the defect.
Then tried to get customer support to send me replacement cartridges for all of the ones that I wasted and they told me no way.
What galls me is that they are still out there being sold to people like me who foolishly bought it on impulse at a store without doing my internet research. Doh!
September 24th, 2007 at 4:29 pm
Well I purchased the Epson CX6000 in Aug.this year. My inks went out awfully quick seeing that I had not printed out more than 20 pages and that was mostly black ink. Then the printer showed that I was almost out of black ink….so I ordered ink. By the time I placed the black ink…that day, the other inks went all at once. I had not used them…you can’t print anything if one tank is empty. So, I replaced all the tanks and the printer will not show that the black has been replaced. Soooo I can’t print. I am so mad I can’t stand it. I looked for a long time before I decided to buy this printer and now I see from all the info on the internet that I am not the only one who is having all this trouble. I emailed Epson today…I’ll let you know what happens. After reading all the comments I expect I’ll be getting the same answers all of you received.
September 24th, 2007 at 11:18 pm
thanks for saving me!! I was about to buy the CX5000 and take it to Argentina all year!!! But that’s a lot just for a SCANNER!
September 26th, 2007 at 4:58 am
I have the same problems with the CX6000- with ink levels showing empty when new cartridges are installed. I purchased the printer in April 2007 and the original cartridges that came with it worked okay, but the minute I installed new Epson cartridges, major problems started. Getting someone to speak with from Epson support had been an ordeal!!! ( no toll free # and unbelievble wait time). Does anyone know of compatible cartridges that work for this model?
September 28th, 2007 at 3:57 am
Bought an Epson Stylus CX6000 a few months ago and have had the ink problems stated above. These problems do seem to be a very deliberate and diabolical scam.
Interesting article I found online.
“Epson reported 7.01 billion yen ($60 million) in operating profits this quarter. This time last year, Epson had a loss of 5.04 billion yen, according to Epson’s press release yesterday. The positive turnaround is due in large part to Epson’s revamped printer product line, with major reductions in producing lower-end inkjet printers, according to the Photo Marketing Association.”
I will never buy another Epson product again as long as I live. I hope anyone who might read this topic would be smart enough not to either. I did learn a very valuable lesson about doing my homework before I buy something, though. Just pathetic that seemingly legitimate companies can’t think of more honest ways to make their money.

I have an epson cx5000. I use a Mac OS 10.3.9. I tried to replace the ink cartrdg’s w/pacificink replacements & it seems as if the printer does not recognize them? Does anyone know of a hack I can use to re-set a counter or smack the printer up the side of it’s head so it will accept a set of new cartidges? TIA
October 3rd, 2007 at 6:17 pm
Well, I received my replacement CX5000 from epson and after printing one B&W page all three of my color cartridges show 1/2 empty.
I can see that I will never get what I payed for and I refuse to spend another dime on an epson cartridge.
In the trash it goes!
October 9th, 2007 at 2:25 pm
Wow… I’m SO fed up with Epson. I’ve used their printers in the past and generally had better results with them than other brands. My old CX4600 worked for maybe a year, and then started going berzerk. Telling me I couldn’t print. My cartridges were empty, even when they were new. Then started streaking and couldn’t be fixed no matter what. SO I “upgraded” to a CX5000. Thought it was wonderful for about a week. Then it said I was out of ink. Jeez! I bought more ink, and it was showing as half-empty after about 10 pages of text!!! Ever since, it’s been off & on, for about a year. Sometimes it’ll go for days saying I have to refill some or all of my cartridges (I get different messages almost every time). I replaced them ALL 2 nights ago, and it STILL won’t let me print one single thing, saying either some or all of the cartridges are empty. Grrr. It hasn’t worked at all for 3 days now, and I HAVE to have a printer. Looks like I’m going shopping again, but will NOT buy an Epson. No wonder they were sued. Time for another class action suit. This is crazy. OH, and as for the photo quality. I have been able to print exactly ONE nice photo since I bought this printer, as every other time I try, it starts streaking half way through the process, forcing me to run the clean nozzle utility & waste even more ink. It SUCKS.
October 9th, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Has anyone found a way to make this printer work?
I got only a few pages out of the original cartridges, and have only been able to get the replacement black cartridge to print once. Now, It wont print at all.
I bought the printer for 100$ at “best buy” which, judging from the comments on this website, should have known better than to have still been selling them in April!

I just bought the CX 6000 2 days ago for $59.99 and it is still in the box. I am returning it to Best Buy tomorrow….Thanks for the heads up.
October 12th, 2007 at 9:44 am
I just got off of the phone with Epson. After receiving my replacement CX5000 and printing 4 sheets, it was dead. Same message: replace cartridges.
This time I demanded a different printer and called them on knowing about the defect. I mentioned all of the bad ink on the internet about this (sorry, I couldn’t resist) and they quickly relented and are sending me a CX7400 which they claim they are not getting complaints about. I am now going searching about it…..
My advise; ring them up and call them on the carpet about!
October 20th, 2007 at 7:00 am
I received a replacement CX6000 for a CX4800 which I had bought at CompUSA. The Cyan ink cartridge didn’t work and Epson replaced it. After printing about 20 pages, mostly in black, the Cyan cartridge was empty and the other cartridges half empty. When I complained to Epson I was told it was because the printer was new and future cartridges would last longer.
Is it possible to refill the cartridges? How good are generic brands?
October 22nd, 2007 at 7:00 pm
Got my new CX7400 replacement for the two CX5000’s that did not work. Followed instructions to a T. Tried to print test page and was told to replace all 4 cartridges. Is this some kind of a joke?
Anyone who is considering buying an Epson product of any kind please beware.

I had to start counting how many printouts I get from my $50 worth of color/black ink! Total:18 printouts and now magenta is at 25%, cyan 50%, yellow 30% and black 50%. If I am so lucky to get 30 printouts, we’re talking $1.67 per page! what a value–NOT!

I have a CX6000 and I am just replaced the cartridges for ink. The Cyan and Magenta are fine, but the yellow and black are not showing up and so now I can print nothing. I paid $35 for a full ink set and it’s useless. Do I buy some more? Love the printer and scanner, but this ink thing has burnt me out on Epson. Will pay more for better printer next time. Only had this one for 65 days.

I recently bought a “factory refurbished” CX6000 for $69. One would expect it to come with ink cartridges that did not have a problem with the ink level reading. However, after I printed about 25 sheets of paper (none of which were photos) the ink levels were nearly at the bottom! If I replace the ink with Epson cartridges, the cost will exceed that of the printer. I’ve decided to put the printer where it belongs….in a dumpster! I’ve used Epson printers for many years, but this was my LAST.

I found compatible cartridges for the cx5000. they did not work. I believe this printe is a dud. I am going to junk it and go buy the new Kodack all in one. Their ink is only $10 for the black and $14.99 for the color cartridge. I don’t print pictures at home so this will do just fine. I can’t believe that Epson messed up so bad with this printer!

I told Epson what I think of the CX6000. Their response was that I should remove the ink cartridges and re-install them, one at a time. Those of you who still have that printer may want to give this a try, as mine has already been trashed (and I have made my last purchase from Epson).

Bought my first CX5000 from the Epson Store (special deal for a “loyal” customer). The first one I received came up immediately with a solid error light that wouldn’t clear after trying several suggested fixes from the East Indian operated service dept. They sent me a replacement which worked OK except for the ink problem - got maybe 20 B&W text prints before all cartridges went empty, even the color. I tried some clone cartridges from two different suppliers, both of which advertised “totally compatible”, and none will work (show empty or comes up with a warning - if you accept Epson’s warning and click “continue” it sends you back to the instructions on how to replace with Epson’s own, obscenly priced, EOM cartridges). Anyway, I’ve not found nor heard of any clones that work and have been forced to use the $60 per set replacements. As near as I can calculate, a B&W text copy costs about $3 per page and an 8X10 color photo print runs about $20. I’d be OK with the ink usage problem if Epson would charge max $20 per set of 4 but this thing is unaffordable. I like the scanner but don’t want this hunk of junk cluttering up my desk just to use as a scanner. As soon as the present set of ink cartridges go dry, which will be pretty fast, the thing goes in the dumpster and I buy anything but an Epson.

I just bought a refurbished cx5000 yesterday for $49 and haven’t opened it yet. But after reading all these comments about the defective ink cartridges, should I not bother opening it and simply return it back to the store to save me some headaches?
I am stumped on what to do now. Return or not return? That is the question. PLEASE help.

Oh how I ****HATE**** Epson.
I bought a CX6000 earlier this year - and it’s an INK PIG. I ditto post #103. I print almost everything black and white… and the machine will “estimate” that the color cartridges are being depleted as well.
Just last night, a friend needed 6 black and white pictures done. I checked ink levels before starting - my colors were very high (all over 80% or so). Did the 6 pictures… and now I have a low ink warning on yellow and the level indicators have dropped like rocks on the cyan and magenta as well.
So… moral of the story - if you print 6 black and white pictures, it will cost you about $20 in ink. Nice, huh?
SCREW YOU, EPSON! This is the last one I buy from you.

Well, it’s me again (I posted #109 also).
I returned the refurbished cx5000 to the store. I’m sooo glad I hadn’t opened the box and found this site just in time. Or should I say, the “Pandora’s Box” was never opened, bwahahaha. =P
After returning it, I got a refurbished Canon MP160 printer instead. Since it uses the exact same ink cartridges as the Canon MP180 printer that I currently have, I’m sure the Canon MP160 won’t give my sister (it’s a gift for her, btw) a headache, since I’m very satisfied with the way Canon ink performs. You see, with Canon ink, even after you get a low ink indicator, you can still print dozens and dozens of pages and decent printouts still come out, until the ink is truly empty.
To sum up, I’m glad I did some research on the cx5000 first and found this site before opening the box. Boy, am I glad I returned that junk.
Moral: Go for other brands people: Canon, HP, anything but Epson.

One more comment. Obviously, Epson just wants to make money off of people by forcing them to buy more ink. That’s why they haven’t fixed the problems with their inks for these printers.
Oh, wait, maybe they shouldn’t be called “problems” if they’re “intentional” behaviors anyways.
Oh well, money is money and business is business, we all know how it works.

Well I love my 6000 again. I dont see many gripe about the quality of this printer, just the damn rip off cartriges. I ordered the pacific ink set for this printer at about half the price and they work just as good if not better than rip-off epson’s. AND my ink levels are not falling at mach 5 speed like the “name brand” cartriges! (Link at top of this page.)

Wow. I just now found this website while looking to purchase compatible cartridges for my CX5000. I had a CX6400 and it quit working because the jets clogged. The person at Epson told me it was because I never turned the machine off. They had me send it in for repair and they sent me a CX6000 as a replacement. I the mean time I needed a printer and I ordered a CX5000 for a ’special loyalty’ price to get me by until they sent the other one back. I have never taken the CX6000 out of the box, but have been using the CX5000. I have noticed it goes thru ink very fast and I really don’t use it that often. The last cartridges I bought were from 4inkjets.com and they worked just fine. However, I am out and just went to reorder. They are not taking web orders but you can call to place a back order. I looked at another website and they are out of the compatible ones until March! I stumbled on this site and haven’t ordered yet, but now wonder if I will have problems with the compatible cartridges.
Sounds like this was not the printer to go with…they were very new when I got them and had trouble finding ink at that time. I also missed the scan button and the light/dark adjustment for copies. This machine does seem much cheaper than the CX6400 I had, which I really liked. I questioned them on the CX6000 replacing the CX6400, because it sounded like a step back, but the Epson lady assured me that it was a newer model. I have always owned Epsons, but sounds like I may have to try something else if I can’t get ink for this one. I refuse to pay OEM prices for cartridges!

Well…Wish I had read this blog before buying my piece of junk CX6000 this past year. STAY AWAY from this printer! I’ll never buy another piece of equipment that carries the Epson name.

Epson CX6000 After 10 pages and twice turn on/off my cartridges are empty. Great Performance and 50$ for ink is gone.

Yeah this sucks. I just got an Epson CX5000 series printer. I can’t print my airline confirmation receipt at this moment because the stupid printer will not let me print unless I replace the color cartridges. I have plenty of black left and that’s all I want to print is black. WTF? I basically have a scam sitting on my desk. I will never buy an Epson product again. F-OFF you A-Holes!

ALERT! THINK BEFORE YOU EVER BUY EPSON AGAIN! It would appear that in an effort to make their ink and cartridges proprietary, Epson may have intentionally built into the software, ON THE MACHINE - AND IN THE CARTRIDGES, code that interacts with the cartridge chip, to combat outside vendor catridges and ink. Whatever they have done, it almost always affects their own cartridges. That is why “THEY” want to send you a “NEW” cartridge, not have you buy another Epson cartridge from the store. There is a good chance that unless you receive a cartridge from them, the machine will NOT reset. Which begs this observation. Why does the machine, in effect, shut down when there is plenty of ink left in the cartridges? It would be enough just to signal a low ink level. The answer, OF COURSE, is that if someone wants to sell you an EXCESSIVE amount of their own supplies they will intentionally design software to shut down, whether a cartridge is full or half-full, to force you into buying new in order to reset (if it resets at all). This CX6000 is a class-action lawsuit replacement from Epson’s CX5000 series fiasco. Those of you who had the 5000 series and were perserverant enough on the web to find all the blogs on the 5000 series problems, know that if you sent them the 5000 for repair, they would replace it free with the 6000. But, like all of Epson’s products for the past 5 years, it has been a major disappointment. Years ago, we had a 10,000 that did not shut off when cartridges were low and was dependable. BUT, THAT WAS YEARS AGO! This Epson is headed for the dumpster - where all of Epson’s current products belong.

i bought the cx5000 on clearance like $50 last year. worked fine so far, the cartridge thing saying i had to replace when plenty of ink remained. so alot of messing with that, order compatible cartridges and used them ok…now it is reading all of the other colored generic cartridges but will not recognize the black as compatible. put a new one..refixed the one it was using before also generic..still quite alot of ink. Are the such things as chip resetters..where do i buy and does it only work for resetting ink levels or does it also make it read the chip on compatible cartridges. These cartridges hold alot less ink than my older brother all in one. Wish i never bought the darn thing. Any one know…if there is a suit, how do i get in on it? They suck ass, and i do feel it is a scam. never will buy epson again.

ARC solution = color mis match!
Hardware = CX5000 & ARC (auto reset chip) ink cart(ridge)s
Software = driver 3.33 & Mac ColorSync (3.0?)
To make these AIOs’ sadistic (9ml) & costly carts a reasonable operation, bulk ink requires either a CIS or refillable (chip resetter or ARC) system. Since 08, used v2 ARCs till the black chip stopped registering–disabling the rest, just purchased 2nd set of latest v3 ARC carts only to discover that while printer produces complete color bar pattern test & monitor displays accurate file colors, actual printer mixing is entirely off: cyan = green, magenta = ochre, yellow = magenta, green = purple!
In 20 yrs of Macs, this color-MIS-sync is a 1st (ran verify/repair ColorSync utility test, passed). Ditto, in 15 yrs of owning Epsons, never had software corruption (but un-&-reinstalled all, yet defect remains). Because I putzed with the last v2 ARC print (to tone down the wrong saturation/shade–eventually giving up & going to SEPIA), I assume I did this yet playing with such settings used to be safe (affecting only the open file), plus all the reinstallations/repairs should’ve reverted everything back to default modes; to my albeit limited knowledge: there’s no gamma-RYB-sepia to undo?
Q’s: Anyone familiar with this result? Could it be hardware: barely used (tho yr old) CX5000 chip reader compromised by the ARCs? short of buying a 2nd set of Epson/4th set of carts (defeating the objective of NOT PAYING MORE FOR INK THAN PRINTER; $150 to produce 50 pgs!) or resuscitating/upgrading my old Mac G3 to see if color’s compatible or reinstalling G4 OS; all to confirm ARCs are the culprit …I’m out of ideas!? Got diagnosis?
